New Sound System for the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall Creates Sound Equality February 1, 2010
(Portland, OR) The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall has a new sound system up and running thanks to the Friends of the Performing Arts Center. The group funded the $115,000 project, which features new speakers, amplifiers and mixing console. The new system provides superior amplified sound quality throughout the entire concert hall. “This was a much needed upgrade” says PCPA Executive Director Robyn Williams. “The old system had not been replaced since the original Schnitzer remodel in 1984 and the upgrade gives the hall even coverage, from the first row all the way through the 2nd Balcony,” says Williams.
The project was a large undertaking, with PCPA staff auditioning six different speaker systems before deciding on line array speakers from Electro-Voice, under balcony speakers from Eastern Acoustic Works and a new sound console from Yamaha. The new console can be remotely controlled by a laptop computer, streamlining the mixing process.
The new sound system will benefit all groups using amplified sound, including the Oregon Symphony (non-classical concerts), White Bird Dance, Portland Arts and Lectures, plus many more. The project is also a cost effective measure for these groups since it will reduce their need to rent sound equipment from outside sources. Williams says overall the new system is a “win-win for all involved.”
The Portland Center for the Performing Arts is the region’s premier performing arts venue management organization. PCPA manages the Keller Auditorium, the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and the Antoinette Hatfield Hall, which houses the Dolores Winningstad and Newmark theatres and Brunish Hall. PCPA operates under the guidance of the Metropolitan Exposition Recreation Commission, a subsidiary of Metro.
The Friends of the Performing Arts Center is a nonprofit organization that acts as the private side of the private/public partnership with the Metropolitan Exposition Recreation Commission. The Friends help the Portland Center for the Performing Arts maintain high-quality theaters that attract premier performances to our community. The group also supports PCPA through region-wide community outreach and advocacy.
